Before you head into a sea of used Ford SUVs, check out our buying guide. We’ll help you figure out which of these all-American family haulers is more your speed. Whether you’re shopping for a rugged ride or thrifty fuel economy, the current crop of used Ford SUVs and crossovers gives you plenty of options.
The EcoSport is an all-around used Ford SUV all-star. For starters, this five-passenger subcompact crossover SUV makes for fabulous citywide transport. With its compact dimensions, the EcoSport flits around crowded streets and slides into parallel parking spaces with the best of them.
But the EcoSport also combines turbocharged power with impressive fuel economy—28 mpg combined—giving you good road trip vibes. This compact crossover even has some off-road flex, thanks to its optional all-wheel-drive performance gear.
The Escape is a good pick for city-dwelling families with tall genes. As a five-passenger compact crossover, this used Ford SUV offers a little more legroom than the subcompact EcoSport. Its size makes the Escape easy to maneuver in a tight spot, whether that’s a downtown parking garage or a jam-packed school drop-off line.
Among used Ford SUVs, the Edge is basically a Goldilocks. As a midsize crossover SUV, the Edge is much roomier than the EcoSport and Escape. However, the Edge also leaves less of a footprint than bigger models, like the Expedition. This is also the part of the used Ford SUV lineup that starts to get really rugged. Whereas the EcoSport and the Escape tow max loads of 2,000 pounds, the Edge ups the ante with a 3,000-pound max rating.
Ford Expedition & Expedition MAX
This gigantic three-row SUV is dedicated to big families who crave old-school power and performance. The Expedition is all about passenger comfort and utility, with enough legroom and cargo space to bolster any road trip. Besides dishing out a comfy cabin for up to eight passengers, the Expedition can tow an enormous boat or a couple of horses. Properly equipped, this SUV delivers truck-level towing capacity, moving max loads of 9,300 pounds.
All three Expedition trim levels are available as a long-wheelbase version: the Expedition MAX. Inside, the long wheelbase translates to greater elbowroom for passengers and a gargantuan cargo hold. This SUV can tow max loads of 9,000 pounds, so the MAX still plenty rugged.
