If you want seating for up to five people, easy drivability, and the impressive gas mileage of a sedan, but with a little more headroom and cargo room, then a used hatchback might be the right option for you.
Used Hatchback Buying Guide
The hatchback is named for its identifying feature, which is a door that opens upward across the whole back end of the vehicle. While hatchbacks deliver more head room, because of their shape, for taller passengers, hip and shoulder room will be about the same as a sedan. So, if you want more space than a sedan because you're tall, a hatchback could work for you, but if you need more room because of your growing family, a hatchback probably still won't be your best option.
Hatchbacks come in a few different sizes going from 3 doors to 5 doors (which, of course, includes the hatchback itself in the count)
- Subcompact Hatchbacks like the Ford Fiesta or the Honda Fit
- Compact Hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf or the Hyundai Veloster
- Mid-Size Hatchbacks like the Toyota Prius
While a hatchback doesn't give you more seating than a sedan, it gives you more options when it comes to cargo. The second row of seats will fold down and because the trunk/door opens fully, both in width and height, you can fit more stuff from bottom to top. The other main reason someone would look into a hatchback is that they like the distinct body style. Hatchbacks are also on the lower end when it comes to price point and on the higher end when it comes to gas mileage.
