With its green-energy powertrains and modern finesse, the used Honda Clarity is a commuter favorite.
First Generation: 2017-Current Model Year
Why you’ll love the first-generation used Honda Clarity: The Clarity is known for its efficient performance – which it executes in more ways than one. Unlike most sedans, the Clarity lets you choose your own form of energy, with three completely different powertrain options.
The Plug-In Hybrid model features a traditional hybrid setup, with a gas-powered engine and electric motor combo. The Electric model delivers – you guessed it – an all-electric driving experience. Then there’s the Clarity Fuel Cell model. Right now, the Fuel Cell is only available via lease agreement, so you won’t find it on the used lot.
Besides offering greener ways to get around town, the Clarity draws you in with a cabin that’s both comfortable and nicely equipped with features. In spite of the three models’ vast powertrain differences, all manage to provide a smooth, agreeable ride.
What kind of power is the used Clarity packing? Under the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid hood, you’ll find a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that works in conjunction with a battery-powered electric motor. Together, they spit out 212 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque for a smooth, satisfying ride.
The used Honda Clarity Electric derives its power from an electric motor that’s coupled with a 25.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Hit the throttle for an enthusiastic 161 horses and 221 pound-feet of torque.
The Fuel Cell also uses an electric motor, but instead of a battery, it derives its power from a hydrogen-fed fuel cell. The motor kicks out an impressive 174 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. On just one tank of compressed hydrogen, the Fuel Cell travels for an estimated 366 miles.
What you need to know about the used Honda Clarity lineup: Before you decide which of these used sedans is right for you, take a look at each model’s feature lineup. The used Honda Clarity Electric and Fuel Cell models are available as single trim models. However, the used Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is available as two trim models--base and Touring.
The base Plug-In Hybrid is handsomely equipped with modern infotainment gear – including two USB ports and an 8-inch touchscreen. It’s also sublimely comfortable with heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Honda Sensing suite of driver safety aids, such as automatic emergency braking, is also standard. The Touring douses you with luxury features such as leather upholstery and remote climate-control preconditioning.
Both the Electric and Fuel Cell include all of the Plug-In Hybrid’s comfort and convenience features. The Fuel Cell adds a premium 12-speaker sound system.
How has the used Honda Clarity changed from model year to model year? Since the Clarity was introduced for the 2017 model year, there have been some important changes shoppers should consider. The original 2017 Clarity was only available as the Fuel Cell model, which you’re unlikely to find on the used market – at least not yet.
For 2018, Honda added the Plug-In Hybrid and Electric versions of the Clarity. Used car shoppers will definitely be able to find these models on the market. Like the Fuel Cell, these new models are also four-door sedans.
What to look out for: Remember that if you’re shopping for the Clarity Fuel Cell model, you’re going to have to skip the used market. Currently, the emissions-free Fuel Cell model is only available via lease agreement.
