Third Generation: 2011-Current Model Year
Why choose the third-generation used Toyota Sienna? This Sienna is both versatile and massively comfortable – two things you can’t live without in a minivan. Choose between seven- and eight-passenger models. The optional second-row captain’s chairs are truly luxurious; passengers will feel like they’re chilling in a mobile La-Z-Boy.
Compared to previous Siennas, the third-generation minivans offer better fuel economy, earning up to 21 mpg combined. They also include an easy-folding third row, so you can expand the cargo hold whenever you’re hauling home improvement supplies or especially big grocery hauls.
As you shop around, you’ll find five used Toyota Sienna trim models: base L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. The L is nicely equipped with modern features, including a rearview camera and central touchscreen infotainment interface. Upgrade to the LE for power-sliding rear doors, a larger touchscreen, and an upgraded stereo system.
The sporty SE trim – new for the third generation – adds firmer suspension tuning for greater on-road precision. Inside, you’ll find stylish leather upholstery and heated front seats. The XLE drops the SE’s performance upgrades and adds power-owning rear windows and keyless entry and ignition. The top-trim Limited adds to most of the above features with a power-folding third-row seat and dual sunroofs.
How has the third-generation used Toyota Sienna evolved? You’ll see quite a few powertrain changes throughout this generation. For the first two years, two engines were on offer, the standard inline-four and optional V6. The 2015 Sienna got a bit of a makeover, with new exterior styling, a stronger body structure, and higher-quality cabin materials.
For 2017, the V6 got a little more kick, boosting output from 266 to 296 horsepower. Together with the retuned suspension, this upgraded engine provides a smoother, more capable ride.
Second Generation: 2004-2010
Why choose the second-generation used Toyota Sienna? When you can find minivans from this generation with decent mileage and a history of regular maintenance, these Siennas are excellent used options. It’s one of the few used options to offer your choice of seven- or eight-passenger seating. These used Siennas also offer all-wheel drive, safety-enhancing performance gear that’s rare in this segment. And compared to segment competitors, these models earned above-average crash-test scores.
How has the second-generation used Toyota Sienna evolved? For 2006, side airbags became standard equipment. Before the 2006 model year, this safety equipment was only standard on the XLE and Limited trim models.
Throughout this generation, you’ll also notice some powertrain evolution. From 2004 to 2005, the Sienna came standard with a 3.3-liter V6 that’s good for 230 horsepower. Although it featured this same engine, the 2006 Sienna only made 215 horsepower because of SAE testing. However, you won’t be able to tell the difference – acceleration and performance in general aren’t effected. The 2007 Sienna improved performance, introducing a new 3.5-liter V6 rated for 266 horsepower.
Buyer beware: Skip any second-generation used Toyota Sienna models built before February 2005. Models that came after this date were improved for safety – especially in side impacts – with revised side airbags and a strengthened side structure.
